Thursday, I was a guest on @WAOK discussing my reporting on the lack of racial demographic data in GA's coronavirus cases. I found that not only was the data on race/ethnicity not being released, in large part, it wasn't being collected. Last night, DPH began reporting the data.
This update came after we pressed for answers and requested more contextual data on race and ethnicity. The unknown race category is still a huge problem that state health workers are working to correct.
This data is more than a headline to say "the coronavirus is hitting African Americans harder." We know the pre-existing conditions/disparities exist. But, collecting & reporting detailed racial data in a pandemic will help to identify issues and allocate resources to save lives.
