In one of my earlier threads, I had talked about the petroglyphs of Val Camonica and their tremendous significance for understanding the cointinuity of Native European pagan beliefs from Stone Age to the end of Antiquity. But, I remembered that I have an interesting...
...tale or two to relate about Val Camonica.

As we know, the filth set foot in the region in the late 5th century, as we can see from the destruction of the sanctuary of Minerva and other Roman-era buildings of religious significance, plus the etching of (((crosses)))...
...into older pieces of art. Yet, paganism was still strong in the area, as in the whole of Northern Italy (reminder that Monte Cassino, the last temple of Apollo to stand, was demolished in mid-6th century by Byzantine scum, and only after facing bitter opposition from locals).
Well, soon afterwards the Lombards came. I had talked about how Lombards in Benevento practiced a fusion of Germanic, Greco-Roman and even Egyptian (the golden snake Barbatus supposedly melted) pagan rituals and, since the Lombards... https://twitter.com/KomninosM/status/1242868504707174400
...were also allied with the pagan Bavarians, one can assume that paganism was still very widespread amongst them. Back in Val Camonica, in 724 the Lombard king (((Liutprand))), who had abandoned "devilish heresy", as per (((Paulus Diaconus))) and embraced Catholicism,...
...actually REFUSED to forbid pagan rites in Val Camonica and Friuli, because he was sure that the locals would rebel if he did. So, it was only after (((Charlemagne))) subdued the region that christianity started being implemented in Val Camonica. Yet, even as late as...
...1498, strict laws were being constantly enacted against pagan practices and the area had a strong history of siding with Gibbelines against Guelphs, id est the secular emperor against the (((Pope))). In the 16th century, two witch trials were carried out in the area...
...with the first being carried out in the 1510s, resulting in more 60 deaths. A chronicle reports: The whole world mourns for the sad lack of faith in God and the saints in Valcamonica. In four places in Valcamonica, c. sixty four people men and women, have been executed, and.."
"...many more are placed in prison".

Similar things happened in 1521, resulting in an almost equal number of deaths. Church reports accused the women of even spreading plague through the air, in an effort to turn the sentiments of the population against the practitioners...
...of the old religion. But, even this was not the end. In 1573, there were still held meetings of "witches" in the Tonale mountain, circular dances were held, people didn't go to church, etc. The end of the rites in Val Camonica coincides with the suppression of the...
...benadanti of Friuli.

As you see, even in a place considered the (((home of western christendom))), like Italy, paganism just refused to die. Paganism and the European man are inseparable. Scratch every Native European nominal christian and you will find a pagan.
As an endnote, sources for the Val Camonica witch trials can be found in Roberto Andrea Lorenzi and Maurizio Bernardelli Curuz. NOTHING you see me say about history is based on speculation, but on hard fact and evaluation of historical material.
