Thank you @JJSchroden. I will start by saying that like most political leaders around the world -- New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore are exceptions -- the leaders and political actors in Afghanistan do not seem to realize the gravity of the threat of COVID19 #AFGPanel.
That includes the government, the opposition, and the Taliban. I see a lot of wishful thinking on line about how Afghanistan will escape the worst. I don't believe it. The population may be young, but the youth are in poor health. In the cities they breathe filthy air.
This makes them very vulnerable. The infection will spread fast in Afghanistan's cities, because social distancing is nearly impossible for most people. I read that 10,000 people attended Friday prayers at one mosque in Kabul today.
Then among those infected there is every reason to think that the mortality rate will be very high. We are running out of medical equipment in New York City. Jack Ma of China had to donate $1 mn to us. How many ventilators are there in Afgh? How will Afgh protect its precious
Medical staff? How will it get drugs? I don't know if people have seen it, but in New York we are digging mass graves because there is no time for proper burial. When this happens in Afghanistan, where is the peace process? Where is "democracy?" human rights?
I should add that the places with the highest incidence of infection in the US are prisons. That will certainly happen in Afghanistan. When prisoners start dying every day, what will happen to the negotiations over prisoner exchange? Will 15 Taliban commanders kill so many people
That you need to dig hurried mass graves? And to the Taliban I ask, what are you fighting for? Do you want have the honor of burying the dead and being responsible for preventing treatment? The UN SG has called for a global cease fire to allow us all to focus on the pandemic.
That is urgent. Perhaps I am wrong, but I don't see that sense of urgency among Afghan political actors. #AFGPanel I see I forgot the hashtag. sorry END
