This is a thread about a failure of peer review, a failure of the editorial process, hypocrisy and double standards: please take time to read and RT........This all goes back to around 5 years ago when..... @bmj_latest @bmj_company @fgodlee
The government began a war on the medial profession in order to drive down their terms and conditions of employment, and as part of this war a piece of 'evidence' was spun and used as ammunition........this was the Freemantle 2015 study published in the BMJ......
The 'avoidable deaths' mantra was weaponised by Jeremy Hunt and the rest is history. The truth underlying the origins (the provenance) of the Freemantle 2015 BMJ study took several years to air, but after a fair bit of digging by myself and others the truth eventually outed...
During this process I met Bruce Keogh in person at a conference and he promised he would correct the article to ensure that the true provenance of Freemantle 2015 was declared, however sadly this never happened......
Keogh's addendum was a damp squib in terms of its inadequacy and overt failure to accurately declare the study's provenance, and despite extensive correspondence with the BMJ, the article remains up on their website without the provenance being adequately declared.
The crux of the matter is that the BMJ allowed a government commissioned piece of work to be hidden as 'independent' research, and to this day Fiona Godlee and others have totally failed to do their jobs and enforce the BMJ's guidance on conflicts of interest and provenance.
There are several reasons as to why this is fairly important. Firstly the BMJ and Fiona Godlee in particular seem to talk the talk when it comes to peer review and conflicts of interest, but when it comes to enforcing standards fairly, they simply aren't doing their job.
Secondly the BMJ is blocking my rapid responses on this topic which is a rather worrying stance for a journal that claims to believe in fairness and transparency. Thirdly the mechanisms of enforcement of conflicts of interests are utterly lacking - COPE is a toothless body.
The BMJ is now effectively ignoring valid criticism and has stuck its head in the sand, readers continue to be misled by an article's provenance remaining inadequately detailed and the journal doesn't care. The BMJ is emphatically not practising what 'it preaches'.
Overall this all stinks to high heaven. Please RT this thread and please apply any pressure you can to hold the BMJ to account. @doctor_oxford @DrGrumble @johannmalawana @RoshanaMN @drphilhammond @drphiliplee1 @juniordrblog @dr_shibley @DrSdeG @dr_zo @pash22 @Retlouping
