/ I try to analyze dispassionately. But I will admit I am ANGRY about the way we have largely ignored the massive harm lockdowns and school closings have on kids. Remember: anyone under 30 is at almost ZERO risk here (there are always outliers; planes crash but flying is safe).
/ Children, more than anyone else, suffer immediately from the lockdowns. They're denied school. They’re denied normal socializing with their friends. In many places they have even - bizarrely - been denied the chance to play outside.
/ The stress even on healthy families is incredible. And for children in troubled families, the cost is far higher; for those kids, schools may well be the only chance they have to be seen every day by an adult who is not high or abusive.
/ Of all the choices we’ve made, sacrificing the mental health of children at zero risk from this illness is the LEAST acceptable. But so many in the media are young and don’t have children, or perhaps are married couples with one child (an equation that makes care easier).
/ At the very least, the media needs to STOP presenting a hugely misleading (to be polite - fictional would be more accurate) picture of the mortality risks associated with #COVID so that parents will let their kids play together outside. That would be a tiny step toward sanity.
