Buckle up, here come the results! The points have been calculated, here is your official Top 20. We'll begin the countdown with number 20. But before we begin, a word on the judging criteria... https://twitter.com/eoin_price/status/1247540292741287940
I counted up all the votes I could find. Each vote counted for 1 point as it wasn't always clear if people were listing their top 5 in order. I suspect if I had given 5 points for first, 4 for second etc we would probably have had something similar.
A lot of people responded and a lot of plays were nominated but unsurprisingly a small number of plays dominated. So without further ado, lets enter the Top 20.
20. Propping up the Premier League table is Ben Jonson's VOLPONE with a relatively meagre 11 votes. Relegation beckons for this 1606 King's Men comedy. A surprise, perhaps, to see this so low? Lots of anti-Jonson but apparently not enough pro-Jonson to propel him up the league
In joint 18th (tied on 12 points) Marlowe's THE JEW OF MALTA & THE WITCH OF EDMONTON by Ford/Dekker/Rowley occupy the final relegation places. A deserved fate for Marlowe but he may have other horses in the race. Ford, Dekker & Rowley will hope for success with other contenders
Next tied on 15th with 13 votes, 3 plays grateful to survive the dreaded drop. Jonson has more success this time with BARTHOLOMEW FAIR, Lyly enters the charts with GALATEA & Dekker fights another day with THE SHOEMAKER'S HOLIDAY. Comedies battle it off at the bottom of the table
In 14th place on 14 votes an authorially contentious selection. ARDEN OF FAVERSHAM nestles safely in the lower half of the table. But who wrote it? Shakespeare? Thomas Watson? Good Old Anon? They'll chatter on the terraces about this but the authorities have allowed it to compete
