So often, people tell me that they find politics today to be too divisive, unnecessarily grating and downright frustrating. Believe me, I get it. But now more than ever, I hope that people can see what I see: That politics is about people. #scpol
Right now, lots of people with lots of ideas are trying to figure out how to respond to the novel coronavirus. It's THE issue at every level: candidates, mayors, city councils, town councils, state legislatures, governors, congress, and the White House. #scpol
This virus is upending every aspect of our politics and our lives. And politics isn't separate from the "real world." It is very much at the center of it. And so, from either my couch, kitchen table or bed, I write the Palmetto Politics newsletter with this in mind. #scpol
I'm lucky to be supported by a newsroom that sees the value in a daily digital product devoted to South Carolina politics. It's a space where I get to share news about everything on the politics beat, whether it's campaigns, policy, or big questions that impact us all. #scpol
Though most mornings my name appears at the top of the newsletter, make no mistake: Everything in the email is a team effort, and our political team both here in Charleston and Columbia is a force. We seek truth, demand answers and work like hell to do it well. #scpol
Politics gets a bad reputation for being cold and heartless. And yes, sometimes that descriptor can be fitting. Politics is cut-throat. By design, it thrives on who wins and who loses. But I go back to people. To me, it always goes back to people. #scpol
People decide who wins elections. People elected to these roles make hard choices about what should happen in times of crisis, like this one. It's people who ask questions and demand accountability when one of those choices veers away from what they want to see happen. #scpol
Yes, it is a trying time for all of us. It's been a challenge to adjust to this new, temporary normal as a political reporter. But it's also been an honor to rise to this challenge and to be able to share important news with readers like you who care. #scpol
On that note, I would kindly ask that you subscribe to our *free* Palmetto Politics newsletter to stay informed about how South Carolina is responding to this unprecedented virus. Thank you for your time and your support. Subscribe here + share: http://bit.ly/2NjIovP  #scpol
