There are several takeaways from this German study. Antibodies do not cause a rapid decrease in the viral load like one would expect which implies a vaccine might be very difficult to achieve good results. The viral load only starts to slowly subside in week 2.
For the first 5 days, the virus replicates like crazy in the upper respiratory tract making coughing and breathing the most likely spread of infection and apparently less by touching objects. It is highly contagious at this point without severe symptoms.
The fact that antibodies don't quickly reduce the viral load is concerning since that is the method by which vaccines work. This may make a working vaccine much more challenging.
The best bet is for everyone to wear a mask so that if you are infected (and don't know it) you're less likely to infect someone else as well as being less likely to be infected. And don't forget to wash those paws.
