Some thoughts on @danny__kruger piece in ConHome. Firstly, we are living in a relative ‘golden age’ of thinking on the ‘One Nation’ Conservatism with the likes of Danny, @Will_Tanner @nickjtimothy @DJSkelton et al. It’s great to see 1/
Although there has been some positive step in the right direction this week, this has to be at the start of consistent programme. All eyes are on gov and unless we see bold One Nation solution(s) to this, then public are going to believe that warm words are just rhetoric 2/
We have to show what a One Nation Conservativism means in this crisis. Yes backing charities is good. But we need to make UK is in a state to recover. Danger that thousands of biz, #socents and charities we will need are going to be sacrificed to vague worries about debt 3/
We need to learn the lessons of 2010-2015. The financial crisis should have been, could have been an opportunity for a bold programme of economic, social and fiscal reform. This would have better or prepared us for the future. What could that have been? 4/
A ‘One Nation’ approach should look at all our ‘institutions’ (state, business, charity, family etc.) and repair, reform, renew and where necessary create new institutions. Far too often Conservatives have fallen into the trap of ignoring our institutional architecture 5/
Istead we have pursued a “get the car back on the road” approach which looks cheaper today but just stores up problems. Also the public see the inequity of saying “let’s spend huge amounts to get back where we were, which we didn’t much like anyway”. We need to be bold 6/
The state, particularly at a local level, needs big reform. We all know the problems of a lack of power at a local level, lack of focus on key challenges, and jumbled lines of authority. COVID-19 has showed there is leadership waiting to be unleashed. 7/
Business wasn’t working even before all this. Productivity on the floor. Growth anaemic. Wealth increasingly concentrated. Conservatives must reform business urgently, not only to ensure a robust recovery but also to keep UK competitive. This isn’t anti-business 8/
Charities need reform too. We need to look at how they can more flexible + responsive to today’s challenges. Charity law is Victorian, needing updating for 2020s. Charity Commission is too often a critic not an enabler. We are unwittingly crushing people’s desire to do good 9/
The aim is to renew and restore these institutions. With 4th Ind Rev in progress we also need new ones to capture and channel innovation. Britain is a great country, but we are no friend to it by turning a blind eye to its failings. 10/
One Nation is not misty eyed longing for the past. It is not soft. It is not economically illiterate. It is a tough, uncompromising look at our nation but with sensitivity to our culture and traditions. This is what I hope this gov will do post COVID-19. Phew! Happy Easter! 11/
