A lot of people latch onto authoritarianism when they feel powerless, and this is very much happening now. The fact is, there is very little we as individuals can do. Direct your anger and horror at the right place: the government who set us on this course, not your community.
The data shows lockdown is working, which is great! Resist urges to call to make it more draconian, just because you want to regain a sense of control. We're going to see hundreds of deaths per day over the coming weeks, and direct your rage to those responsible: government.
Those deaths are not because what we're doing *now* isn't working, they're because the government decisions earlier locked us onto this course. Hundreds of people a day will die because of them, not because your neighbours walk their dog twice a day.
Boris Johnson and his government are butchers. They locked us onto a course by delaying lockdown where we are now fully realising its consequences. Hundreds of people a day are dying because of them.
Hundreds of people a day are dying because Boris Johnson and his government decided to squander the time they had by not ensuring the NHS was adequately prepared. That's the target for your anger. Feel that rage.
The deaths today are a direct result of actions a few weeks ago, when the government was actively trying to get as many people infected as possible. You should be furious at that.
You're right to be angry. We have no control over the situation. Hundreds of people a day are dying because the people with the control decided that was a hit worth taking.
And if you want to regain a sense of control over the situation, here's what to do: think about how we hold Boris Johnson and his government to account over the senseless slaughter of thousands of people. Organise. Make a plan. Let's punish the people who are responsible.
