There’re tons of groups with non korean members, so where do we go from here? https://twitter.com/jooktl/status/1248264633724686337
The term “kpop” was created by the western market. Koreans call it “idol music”. And korean media themselves created the term BTSpop to represent how detached they’re from that music industry. The fact that you need BTS to be kpop for some odd reason and can’t let them be
Kpop is a product, it was created with an intent. It’s not the spontaneous expression of a culture, therefore it’s not “popular music”. Kpop is not a genre but an industry. BTS broke every boundary set by that industry. They said they didn’t want to be boxed like that
“they’re korean therefore they’re kpop” is such a dumb argument when there’re idols from China, Thailand, even the US. If you’re born in a certain country you’re not conditioned to a certain genre of music. That’s such a backwards way of thinking.
Like y’all need to stop inserting you uninformed opinions in the conversation. How does your lives change if we say BTS are not kpop? What’s your goal here?
