I saw "russians" trending and i feel like i need to clear some things up since im, obviously, the best and only person who can do it.
I rt'ed some tweets, but without the proper translation the meaning will be lost.
Let us start the thread. (1/?)
Russia is a multicultural country and in our language there are different words to describe "russians - those who live in Russia" ("россияне") and "russians - the ethnicity" ("русские"), but since its the same word in English some of you may get confused. (2/?)
That is basically why we don't have categories like Asian-Russian, bc Russia is home to a lot of asian ethnicities and cultures (buryats, yakuts, tuvans, mongols just to name a few). I am myself from a place where 1/3 of population is asian! (3/?)
Of course there are also chinese, korean and other south-east Asia people living here, especially near the south-east border (duh). Thus when you say stuff like "white russians" you erase a huge chunk of its population. The majority of Russia IS in Asia ffs. (4/?)
Plus you have to consider inter-ethnic marriage that is so commonplace we almost don't pay it any mind. Granted we still have a long way to go but here's my point - almost no russian is "pure" russian. There's even a saying that goes "Take a russian and you'll find a tatar" (5/?)
And this is something i can speak about from my personal experience and lineage. As i've already said i grew up in a place (the Republic of Buryatia) with huge asian influences, which dictated how i saw the world around me. I, honestly, didn't even experience racism until i (6/?)
left my hometown to go study in a neighboring federal subject. I didn't know much about it, if anything at all, until i got a Tumblr. This was when i realized how lucky i was to have such positive influence around me when i was growing up. Not everyone is as lucky of course (7/?)
I lived in a blissful ignorance, you may even say. And around this time came my ethnic identity crisis which, to some of you, may sound kind of dumb but let me explain. I have all kind of blood flowing in me: russian, tatar, polish, jewish, buryat and a lot more. (8/?)
And i have no idea how to identify myself with this kind of mad soup. Sure i am "russian", but only bc i live here. You saw me, i don't really look like a typical "russian" person. I got my looks from my dad, who is half-tatar, but i look even more tatar than him lol. (9/?)
And then here's the whole "russians are racists" thing. And, i mean, sure, but in the same way any other country is (not America, tho, its not THAT bad here). We have our fair share of neo-nazis and other racist schmucks, but they never represent the sane majority. (10/?)
Also here's this little thing called "cultural differences" in which if a person doesn't do their research they might do or say smth inappropriate. Not out of ill intent, of course, just ignorance. This is what people should consider when interacting with others on the net (11/?)
You should not go into a fit and cancel a whole community over smth like this. Be considerate, try to explay why what this person did is wrong. It will be more productive and won't leave a sour taste in your mouth (mass attack on russian cosplayers flashback) (12/?)
With all this in mind its only natural some people may not feel comfortable sharing their ethnicity or, well, anything for that matter. And they might go and label all the "white knights" as "stupid barbarians". We don't want this, right? (13/?)
When you google "russian" you will most likely get a light-skinned, fair-haired, blue-eyed person, but very little russians are actually like this. We come in all shapes and colors, we all have different personalities and beliefs, but these differences ultimately bring us (14/?)
all together, don't they? Im not talking just about the russians here. This is what brings us together as a species, we should never let these petty squabbles get between us. Yes, i am russian, and i am more than anyone aware of how shit we are. (15/?)
NOW lets talk about Opression. Here' a list of "fun" things you should google if you want to know ANYTHING about our history (with the added "in Russia" of course):
- Turco-Mongol rule
- Serfdom
- Oprichnina
- Smuta (Time of Troubles)
- The October Revolution
(16/?)
- GULAGs
- The Soviet rule as a whole
- Well, at least you know about Stalin, i hope
- the 90s and New Russians
- and w/e the fuck is happening rn
I did my homework for the USA and the West, has been doing my whole life. Now do me a favor and learn about my country. (17/END)
