books i have read whilst in quarantine - a thread
leigh bardugo - six of crows

i read this out of sheer stress. it’s my comfort read, makes me feel a little better and always gets me into the reading mood. 5/5 as always i adore this book
samuel beckett - endgame

another reread. i needed to write an essay on beckett’s waiting for godot and i’d previously studied endgame before so i had a lot of contextual notes in my copy. i also just rly like this play even if it is a little difficult to follow. 4/5 read
brendan reichs - nemesis

dnf. it wasn’t horrific or really bad it was just cringey and i didnt want to force myself through a book i really wasn’t enjoying. it just felt very juvenile in plot and writing. really disappointing considering the premise is so interesting. 3/5
tomi adeyemi - children of blood and bone

by no means is this bad but it wasn’t as original as everyone had made it out to be. it’s a nice standard YA fantasy. if i read this when i was younger i probably would’ve adored it but i’ve read so many exactly like it already. 4/5
brandon sanderson - skyward

not a bad book. i’m just not interested in scifi & wasn’t attached to the main character. there’s nothing wrong with it. its weird bc i wasn’t enraptured but i wanted to know what happened so i finished it. won’t be continuing w the series. 3/5
lorraine hansberry - a raisin in the sun

i had to read this for my course and i love it. it’s such a good play and i loved this in my tutorial. it’s also short and comprehensible for people who wanna get into plays but find it hard to follow. 4/5
scott lynch - the lies of locke lamora

i have FINALLY read this. smth about the pacing was a bit off for me but a gorgeous book nonetheless. i really loved all the characters in this and will be continuing w the series eventually. a good starter for adult fantasy. 4/5
john gay - the beggar’s opera

this is an example of a play that has to be watched not read. it was a good play but i found it a bit confusing to follow. although, that might just be me. it’s good nonetheless. i like the themes it deals with. 3/5
alphra behn - the rover

yeah...no. nearly sent me into a reading slump. really just not for me. very confusing to read i had to read it twice to understand what was happening but it was for my course so i read it anyway. could be worse though - somewhat interesting plot. 2/5
salman rushdie - midnight’s children

this was just straight up weird. i appreciate the writing but idk. this isn’t rly a spoiler but there’s a scene describing the circumcision of an infant from the perspective of said infant? sent me fully into a reading slump. 2/5
susan dennard - windwitch

adore this book. another standard YA fantasy but i lovvveeee the romance in this sm. i love how incredibly slow the slow burn is and i adore all the characters. what a great book and i definitely prefer it to the first book (truthwitch). 5/5
(i read windwitch after children of blood and bone but i fucked up the thread so i needed to delete it and repost it.)
truman capote - in cold blood

really interesting book especially if you're interested in true crime. i'm not the biggest fan of the writing style but it didn't take away from the book too much. it does read like a novel so this would be a good gateway into non fiction. 4/5
the song of roland

idk who the hell would read this tweet and think it's time to read some old french literature but this was actually quite entertaining. definitely prefer old french over old norse literature. idk, it's bloody, gory. it's what you'd expect from really. 3/5
joseph conrad - heart of darkness

you either love this book or you hate it.

2/5
j.r.r. tolkien - the hobbit

what a charming book. it’s so cute. i had a great time reading this. it’s so atmospheric and whimsical and fantastical. love it! would highly recommend. if you’re used to YA fast-paced books it takes a bit of time to get into but it’s worth it. 5/5
alan moore - the watchmen

so this really is an amazing story. i love the themes and how they tell the story especially with the use of non linear time. it just works. personally really not a fan of comics so i couldn’t get into it but bc the story was so great. 4/5
percy bysshe shelley - the cenci

i sped through this this morning. it was a good play, definitely better than a lot of classics i’ve read before. heavy on the violence and very triggering tho. 4/5
susan dennard - bloodwitch

excuse me sir do you have time to listen to me talk about my lord and savior, aeduan?

fuck this book was so good. perfection in a book. the ending. ugh. so good. please read this series i can’t wait for the next one. such a refreshing fantasy. 5/5
shakespeare - macbeth

i read this in three hours. it's short. idk what to say it's shakespeare i can't say it's a bad play or that it's one of his better known ones it's fucking macbeth. so yeah. i like this play. 4/5
erin morganstern - the starless sea

this book was meh. the first 200 pages were good but the last 300 dragged on. it felt like nothing really happened for so long and then suddenly we were hit with so much plot all at once. the writing’s v lyrical and beautiful tho. 3/5
libba bray - the diviners

this is a cute book. i feel like if i read this when i was younger and REALLY into YA i would’ve loved it but right now it’s unsatisfying to me and just feels the same as every other YA book. i keep switching between 3 and 4 stars bc of this so 3.5/5
casey mcquiston - red white and royal

i really liked this. this is definitely one of my favourite romances i’ve read ever. it’s so cute and charming. my only complaint is that sometimes the way prince harry talks makes me cringe but it’s rly easy to get past. 4/5
shelby mahurin - serpent and dove

this was okay it’s quite a cliche book. if i could get a dollar for every time i read a book with this same “plot twist” i would be rich. i like the characters but i don’t ADORE them. they’re okay. this book overall was rly just okay 3/5
jennieke cohen - dangerous alliance

i sped through this in one day using a mix of audiobook and reading. it’s a really easy, fast yet satisfying read. the ending was one wrapped in a tiny bow and i loved it

this book contains abuse and mentions of rape.

4/5 (but a low 4)
oliver sacks - the man who mistook his wife for a hat

i thought this book was going to be a series of studies...i didn’t expect me to send me into the existential crisis that it did. it’s such a good book. it reads like a novel and is one of those books everyone should read 5/5
david grann - killers of the flower moon

this is sooo good. it made me so mad about everything like the treatment of the osage tribe makes me so angry in a way i can not explain ugh. a really dark part of US history that’s often overlooked. really well written!!! 4/5
adam kay - this is going to hurt

i couldn’t summarize my thoughts into tweet length so i had to do it on my notes app (the first time in this thread). i read this book in one sitting and its one of the most heartbreaking yet witty books i’ve ever read. 5/5
