I've worked retail, I've witnessed shoplifting, this isn't how it works and if you try to stop the shoplifter you'll probably get in MORE trouble.

Each and every time my manager's response was the same, at multiple places:
Correct inventory, report the theft, and get back to work. They expect theft, they build it into the budget because it's cheaper than hiring security staff.

BTW, the overwhelming majority of theft is wage theft. Like, by an overwhelming margin.

PS. Profit is the unpaid wages of the worker. They're stealing from you every fucking day, who cares if someone grabs a pencil that cost $0.10 to manufacture being sold for $9.99?
