the #NotALion was first identified in 2013, when this image of a specimen was shared by @bxknits. the first to realize the specimen was of a previously unidentified genus was @senseshaper, who gave it its name. #LockdownBestiary
since then, researchers have searched many ecosystems in all corners of digitized collections, and many species of #NotALion have been identified. I will be sharing some throughout the day for the #LockdownBestiary

first, there's the wild #NotALion. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PET!

suitable for speed as well as distance, there's the riding #NotALion.

it's a bit hard to spot in this image as the other details are somewhat distracting, but if you look well enough you can make out a span of #NotALion.s of burden.

#NotALion.s were held as livestock, too. In his unequaled wealth, King Solomon had twelve!

the scavenger #NotALion looks ferocious but don't worry, it only eats already dismembered human.

the hunter #NotALion, on the other hand, looks super cute but is as dangerous as the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.

Jean Lallemant le Jeune's species of #NotALion defies classification.

(see also the hashtag #JeanLallemantleJeuneLookingAtThings for this fabulous manuscript)
with this rich diversity of species and skills, it is no wonder that some people became overly fond of #NotALion.s

John Donne even started a #NotALion cult

but then The Swerve happened, and people were cured of such superstitions

having discovered the #NotALion, researchers soon discovered other #NotAnAnimal.s, too! #LockdownBestiary https://twitter.com/JillWhitelock/status/1248600489811378177
and another distant relation of the #NotALion is the #NotAWolf (seen here at @LeedsCityMuseum)

let's not forget the #NotAnElephant, the best documented genus of the class of #NotAnAnimal. you can find its taxonomy here: https://www.uliwestphal.de/elephas-anthropogenus/index.html

since its identification in 2013, archaeologists have been digging to look for the oldest fossils of #NotALion, and one of the earliest is here, from c.625BC: https://twitter.com/Pythika/status/1160234117881049088

(though this is very much a vibrant field of discovery, so please contribute your own examples!)
in the 1600s, western European artists started depicting another animal, similar to, but definitely not a #NotALion: the #NotANotALion (or "lion" for short. here by Rembrandt, c.1660) #LockdownBestiary
it was first thought this was the same animal, merely drawn better, but later discoveries (such as this from the Utrecht Psalter) show that the #NotANotALion had co-existed with the #NotALion for centuries. #LockdownBestiary
likewise, even when the #NotANotALion had become the preferred subject for depictions, the #NotALion did not completely disappear. #LockdownBestiary
“Thanks to the #LockdownBestiary I now know everything there is to know about the #NotALion!”
