So I had to get groceries yesterday. The store I shop with sent me an email days ago stating they& #39;re trying to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by limiting the numbers of shoppers in the store, putting dividers between customers/shoppers, and having cashiers wear masks/gloves...
I fully support all of this and I was expecting (and happily willing) to wait in line outside the store to get in. I got the email almost a week before my trip so I figured everything would and should be in place by now. But that wasn& #39;t the case at all..
So they had a "please wait here" sign at the entrance and guidance ropes but NO ONE was making anyone wait to go inside. And the store was as packed as what one might see the day before an ice storm in the midwest. So... wtf?
There wasn& #39;t a single isle in the store I entered that didn& #39;t already have 1 to 3 other shoppers in it. And there were at least a dozen employees doing shopping for pickup/delivery orders too. None of them wearing masks. No gloves in sight either. Not a single employee had PPE...
When I got to the register I noticed no plexiglass dividers as well. So I asked the cashier what& #39;s up? She said they wouldn& #39;t give employees PPE or hand sanitizer even though she asked for it daily. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😕" title="Confused face" aria-label="Emoji: Confused face">This poor woman wasn& #39;t even being allowed to leave her register to wash hands!
I felt so bad for this woman I offered her my own bottle of hand sanitizer that I had with me. She declined but I& #39;m still upset. This feels so careless on the part of the store. So I sent an email asking someone to look into this and see if we can get it fixed...
If our grocery store employees get sick what happens? They either spread it to shoppers or they stay at home and then what happens? No groceries. Seriously we can do better than this. Grocery store cashiers are essential. We NEED them right now! We need them safe.
If you go out and notice any store employees that aren& #39;t being kept safe, if you notice a lack of distancing, if you are in an unsafe situation because of your employer... REPORT IT. Call a local news station. These workers have a right to a SAFE AND CLEAN work environment!!
All it takes is one email or one phone call to report something to a head office of a company or a local news station and make a beneficial change for our essential workers. There is no excuse for a lack of separation and hand washing. Look out for your fellow humans.
Be aware. Look out for each other. Be safe. And wash your dang hands. That is all.
**Before I end this thread, I am fully aware masks are in short supply. Which is all the more reason the plexiglass dividers and hand washing should be implemented in these settings.
