I& #39;ve been having weekly phonebanks on Thursdays since October. Seven people were signed up for my virtual phonebank this week. Just one showed up to the Zoom meeting tonight, a 15 year old girl who hasn& #39;t volunteered for Bernie yet but wanted to know how she could start. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đź’”" title="Broken heart" aria-label="Emoji: Broken heart">
She asked me a bunch of questions about how the elections work and stuff and if there& #39;s anything else she could do for Bernie since he can still get votes. I& #39;m going to do my best to find ways she can still help. If you have ideas please put them here.
She asked me if Bernie suspended his campaign because he ran out of money. I don& #39;t think so, I said; I think the fact that voting is still happening during this virus was really weighing on his conscience and he didn& #39;t want any more people to die.
She asked me about why some states were making people vote in person when it& #39;s so dangerous during COVID-19. I& #39;m so grateful that she is asking these questions that we all are asking, that Bernie is prompting the country to ask, the questions we& #39;ve always deserved answers to.
I explained the politics of voter suppression best I could. Remembering when my eyes were first opened to all of this shit. I was much older than 15. I accepted the system well into college. I want to hug her. I wonder if she is/will be as depressed as most of us, or more.
She also asked me, "I heard something about Biden being accused of sexual assault. Why isn& #39;t the media writing about that?"
I told her she is asking all the right questions. Talked about corruption and corporate media. It felt wrong to just answer. All of the answers are bad.
Before she had to go she asked me for some progressive news websites. I& #39;m going to email them to her. Those that come to mind: The Intercept, Current Affairs, Jacobin, Democracy Now, Rising on The Hill - any others?
When we hung up I went into the next room and told my partner about this conversation and sobbed. Thank you to that young woman. You are already a leader. This generation is hope.
