Well that's pretty much what I can say about the plot without getting much more spoilery, but there is still a lot to be said of the film.
For starters, the soundtrack is full of The Beatles covers, which serve a great narrative purpose and also sound amazing.

Sean Penn is a flawless actor, and he got nominated for Best Actor on this performance.
For a 7 year old, Dakota is also amazing; this is the film that brought her to stardom and with good reason.

If you want uplifting and sweet entertainment, you'll probably enjoy this movie, although it is far from perfect.
It oversimplifies some real life issues in favor of sentimentalism, taking sides on a very complicated scenario. But it still is a good time.
