We're seeing a political failure by Democratic leaders to stand up and explain to Americans that after infections start to drop we will need to stay isolated for some time, and then might have repeat the whole cycle again, for two years or more. https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1245553724354772994
It's a thankless political message to send, but someone needs to do it. The strategy of sitting back to see what Trump does, in the hopes that it comes back to bite him, is deeply irresponsible.
Someone needs to be honest with the people at highest risk that their lives are not going to go back to normal in May, or June, or September. This includes the elderly, those with certain medical conditions, and a large portion of black America—it's not a small group of people!
A moment is coming when someone in authority will have to stand up and give diametrically opposite advice than the President. Trump will say something like "it's over, let's have a big parade" and someone will need to counter it. That someone will not spring forth from the ground
There needs to be a credible national figure who takes over the job of the President in this area, informing the American public what is going on, what they can expect in the future, and what they should be doing. This is the job of the political opposition in a failed government
Instead, the Speaker of the House has sent herself home and left the national stage, the Senate has recessed and the Minority Leader vanished with it, the presumptive nominee is sitting quiet, and the popular and respected ex-president doesn't want to get involved.
"Let Trump drive off a cliff," whatever you think of it as a political strategy, is a reprehensible way to handle this crisis. It doesn't help that most of our elderly Congressional leaders are clearly worried about saving their own skins, and letting that guide their decisions
