A list of the things I learned while checked into a rehab facility:
The woman who overdosed on lithium and alcohol lived in a tiny Colorado town. Her husband resented her for her addictions. She felt like she had nothing and nobody so she used
The girl who would get drunk and destroy her art she created loved to garden. She said she liked the idea of giving life to something instead of ruining it
The guy who used to sell thousands of Xanax only did it to pay his bills. He moved out of the house when he was 17 because his parents were terrible alcoholics. Then he became one
The elderly woman who would cook and get so drunk she couldn’t handle herself at the table had a wonderful sense of humor. She made me laugh when I felt like I had no reason to
The guy who bought Benzos off the dark web who tried to kill himself had been sober for 9 months. He relapsed and was so disappointed in himself
The guy who would drink every night and do cocaine had a highly stressful accounting job. He got so stressed over his work he used to ease the pain
The girl who showed up with fresh scars on her arm from her suicide attempt who seemed so angry with the world was really just angry at herself. She said alcoholism would kill her one day
The nurse whose keys would jingle when she walked down the hall and wake us up every 15 minutes was an ex heroine addict. She wanted to help other addicts
The ex army counselor who seemed to ramble on lost his daughter to drug addiction. I think he wanted to understand her more
The people I saw in the cafeteria who were at the hospital for suicide attempts always pushed the tables together so their entire group could sit with each other. They didn’t want anyone to feel as alone as they had
There’s always more to someone than what meets the eye. We’re all human. We’re all beautiful. Get to know the strangers you normally wouldn’t. Be there for people. Love love love them, always
