Something that I find super puzzling:
When I interview engineers and ask them to describe the best manager they ever reported to, they always describe how technical the manager was and that they valued their ability to solve problems and unblock the team and...
that the highly technical manager had great suggestions regarding direction of growth, challenges and ideas for impactful projects to focus on.
When I interview managers about the value they bring to their team, they always focus on how they...
grew the communication skills of the engineers. Things like teaching engineers conflict resolution skills, how to get stakeholder buy-in, how to prioritize. Stories about smart and shy engineers and how the manager helped them grow in to a leader are very typical.
I can't figure out this discrepancy between what I hear engineers value and what the managers I interview think that their teams value.
