Excellent @SIRRFS webinar tonight by Dr. Vatakancherry: "Clinician not technician: History and Future of VIR"
A lot of great insights on how the new integrated #IR training paradigm will help advance the field.
A lot of great insights on how the new integrated #IR training paradigm will help advance the field.
An often overlooked component of #IR training is the 4th year of #medschool. An intensive 4th year provides an excellent foundation for success in #residency and beyond. In addition IR Sub-I& #39;s, spend time in high volume surgical services.
For applicants applying into #IR, look for programs that have "bought-in" to the new training paradigm. Key indicators include a longitudinal IR clinic, an inpatient admitting service, and a wide breadth of service lines.

Look for programs that move beyond the current #ACGME requirements for an IR residency. Programs that are dedicated to training comprehensive IR physicians and future leaders in the field will have a more integrated and longitudinal clinical curriculum.
This will look different program to program. Ideally, training will include time in vascular surgery, #NeuroIR, and multiple ICU months. Ensure you become knowledgeable in #woundcare, perioperative antibiotics, pain control, and management of common comorbidities
Training should also include time in a longitudinal IR clinic.
- build a longitudinal relationship with patients
- watch evolution of disease processes over multiple years
- gain skills in #practice building and navigating relationships with referring providers.

Finally, put it all together in the PGY6 year. With all the skills gained MS4-PGY6 you are ready to continue to hone your procedural skills, #mentor trainees below you, start acting as a junior faculty, and begin preparations for your own clinical practice upon graduation.
Lastly, some of the above will not be possible at all programs, but don& #39;t hesitate to advocate for yourself in promoting these changes. The @SIRspecialists has many resources to help, such as the Critical Care Course for those w/o adequate ICU training.

Thanks again to the @SIRRFS and Dr. Vatakencherry for putting on this webinar. Hopefully, it was helpful for some of you #medstudents or #RadRes out there.
Sorry, @VISLAMDSCAIP, I didn& #39;t get you tagged appropriately on the initial threatd.
