Thread. Eighteen states attorneys general have asked the Department of Education to delay implementation of new Title IX guidelines for campus sexual misconduct. Here's why this is misguided, and how you can help.

It's plain b.s. to claim that #COVID makes this a bad time for new guidelines. On the contrary: Title IX officers can't be too busy right now, so they have plenty of time to incorporate the new guidelines before students return to campus.

It's also worth noting that the guidelines have been in the pipeline for a year & a half. So why complain now? Like those southern governors trying to ban abortion, the signatories to the attorneys general letter aren't letting a good crisis go to waste.

The new guidelines aren't perfect, but they'll increase due process for faculty & students accused of sexual misconduct. Here's a list of some of the folks who've decried the existing system of adjudication on campus.

Many journalists, academics, & activists have criticized failures in due process on campus. Here's a partial list:

Title IX has also failed to keep predators off campus. Larry Nassar was allowed to remain in his position at Michigan State after the school’s Title IX coordinator somehow concluded in 2014 that Nassar’s behavior was “medically appropriate.”
