A week from today, May 15, we’re hosting a Zoom conversation from 4-5:30pm with Dr. Rose Brewer, @rlmartstudio, and @SusanRaffo. (thread)
The coronavirus is changing everything, at the same time as it highlights the same old foundations of white supremacy and capitalism that have shaped the United States for centuries.
The crisis has drawn attention to systemic problems that our communities have called out for generations: money for corporations instead of working people, the need for healthcare and housing for everyone, the impacts of anti-Black racism on the health of Black communities.
But what do police have to do w/ it? How has investment in policing/punishment instead of healthcare & housing led to this crisis? What can the mutual aid & community care that we are practicing now teach us about longterm practices of community safety and alternatives to police?
And what should we watch out for in the months and years ahead, as powerful forces like the National Guard and local police use the pandemic as an opportunity to expand their power?
We are cohosting this conversation with @BlackVisionsMN, and we’lll talk with these three movement leaders about these questions, and reflect on what this moment means for our work to build a world where we keep each other safe.
