I’m not even sure populists will have to make that argument to succeed. Our economies are crashing, millions of people will lose their jobs. Populist in Italy? Blame the EU. Populist in Germany? Blame your government for spending billions to help “lazy” Italians and Spaniards. In Hungary? Blame foreigners. And on and on
The thing about this crisis and populism is this: Everyone can keep blaming the people they’ve already been blaming, but voters will be more receptive to it because there’s more misery to go around
