Thank you! I will add tips in this thread: https://twitter.com/gwynnotpaltrow/status/1248370090732445696
1. Networking is key. I think most of the opportunities that I received were due to me knowing someone who could vouch for my skill set and work ethic in my absence.
2. Do not be afraid to put yourself out there! Whether you are applying to an REU, graduate school, conferences, or any other career advancement opportunity, you never know what awaits, but you have to apply. Just get out of your own way! ☺️
3. Create an organized list of opportunities that you want to apply to and include their deadlines. Organization is key especially since you don’t want to forget about and miss an opportunity. Also in the spreadsheet include what you need for each application.
4. Prepare early. Speak to the recommendation writers ahead of time and let them know where you are applying. Prepare your CV. Give yourself enough time to complete personal statements.
5. Once you get to the research opportunity NETWORK WITHT YOUR COHORT AND PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS. This is what truly helped me the most. My peers knew of various opportunities that I had never considered.
Please add to this thread if you have additional advice as it pertains to applying to REUs and other career advancement opportunities.
