I'm watching more short films, because I have less time than I've ever had to watch anything longer, and because I'd like to make one myself once this pandemic fucks off.
So here's a thread of the shorts I've loved in lockdown. Please recommend more?
1. De Natura by Lucile Hadžihalilović. Her films make me leave the cinema to catch my breath. Mesmeric, unsparing, grotesque without being ugly ever. She is so good at getting beautiful performances from young actors. https://vimeo.com/404792983
2. En Rachâchant by Straub-Huillet. Lucile H's Innocence is a great film about education. So is this new wave Bartleby. I love the wide lens in the kitchen, & the tough tenderness between Ernesto and his mum. Stylised but spacious & humane. https://vimeo.com/246288299
3. Snowy Bing Bongs... by @cocooncentral, dir. Rachel Wolther and Alex H. Fischer. (It's a long short. Who cares?) I saw this at @NOFS. I love the commitment, the design, the clowning, the foley. A private fantasia up there with Pink Narcissus.
4. Blue by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Where to start with this man? I love that it's elegant, grounded and rigorous. Simple as a diving board. https://vimeo.com/404865437
5. Taking Stock by @DuncanCowles. I loved this deceptively simple 'meditation on failure' at @LSFF. It speaks to me, though I wish it didn't. https://vimeo.com/243691824
6. The Pioneer by David Lowery. I like this one for the eerie power of the writing and I love it for Will Oldham. @edricey you might too.
