{how-to use patreon thread for creators!}
lots of folks are starting to use @patreon. GOOD. artists will need sustained support over the coming months (years?) to make it through this catastrophe. many of them are asking me for advice about whether to go monthly or “per thing”➡️
here is the deal with patreon. you can charge once a month, flat rate (say $5/10/20). you can also choose to charge PER event/post/podcast/song/whatever/thing, multiple times a month. this puts you in a God position with everybody’s credit cards.
which to choose? it’s confusing➡️
my advice to patron creators: choose a monthly package ONLY if you have 100% regular content OR if you need “general support”. e.g.
1) a daily/weekly podcast
2 a painter who needs $$ & will post blogs about work/life situation
3) a venue needing to keep staff paid/lights on.➡️
if you’re a creator making irregular content, OR not sure exactly how your relationship with patronage is going to unfold, CHOOSE TO CHARGE PER THING. i do this, and i’ve hacked it: i charge my patrons once a month to keep the staff paid, and AGAIN anytime i release something. ➡️
this gives you ultimate control over your future with your patrons, since you can’t switch systems once you’ve started your account. i always say: you can make a month into a piece of content, but you can’t do the opposite. flexibility is power. ➡️
upshot, if you aren’t sure, charge per thing. you can always just charge on the first or last day of every month, or (as i do) put out a blog once a month - whenever - that releases money from peoples credit cards. i call this my monthly “state of all things”; i charge for it. ➡️
important note: people can CAP THEIR PATRONAGE. so if someone really just wants to give you a maximum of $1 a month even if you put out three things, that’s baked into the system. encourage, encourage your patrons to cap their patronage. then nobody feels trapped or guilty. ➡️
if you want to see how i’ve used patreon, this is a list of everything i’ve ever released (100+ times), including the monthly blogs that i charge for. it will give you a good idea of the cadence. i am here to help you if you have questions.
