I've heard from sources @utulsa and other places in #highered that some professors are increasing students' work load during this #onlineteaching transition. This is wrong and immoral. 1/
All of that advice you see about pushing work onto students is about classes that were intended to be online from the get go, not for the situation we are in now. You should be in the business of making everyone do less work, yourself included. 2/
I have cancelled all of my exams and assignments except for the final exam. I have also assured my students that their grade will not be lower than it was before the #covid online transition. 3/
Why? Because at this point, WE ARE NOT MEASURING LEARNING. We just aren't. We're measuring how well students respond to an extraordinarily disruptive pandemic. Actually, we are more likely measuring the resources they have at their disposal to handle it. 4/
Many students had to move unexpectedly. Some have had the illness or know people who have. Some of their family may be dead b/c of it. This is on top of the many challenges that life already throws at us on a regular basis. Let's not fool ourselves about what we're doing here. 5/
In addition to changing the course reqs, I have committed to providing the education that students have paid for. I give synchronous lectures that I record so they can stream asynchronously. I am still teaching #data analysis & arranged for them to remote into our lab pcs 6/
I am allowing them to submit any of the cancelled assignments for feedback and I have made myself available for any question, whether it is related to the course or not. 7/
In sum, be a human first. Have some compassion. #Covid19 sucks. We don't have to make it worse! 8/8
