Yesterday I saw Chanel Rion in the West Wing. I was surprised: I had heard she’d gotten kicked out of the briefing room. Yet there she was, standing in the back. She spoke in an authoritative manner with the president about issues of the day.

America has a tradition of self-invention, from Jay Gatsby to Holly Golightly. Chanel Rion, who has done something similar, found a kindred spirit in the briefing room: a former reality TV host, playing to a socially-distanced crowd. Between the two of them, it was quite a show
