Today, one of my coworkers was furloughed.
I know I should have expected this. But I didn’t.
Furloughs + layoffs only happen at bigger companies. Bigger newspapers who have more staff on hand.
We only have three reporters. Including me, who is part-time.
He was furloughed because he’s the sports reporter, and there’s obviously no sports going on right now.
When the virus started and sports was first canceled, he helped with news.
He’s been helping with news every since he started at our paper. But my word, if he hasn’t handled some of the neatest story ideas over the past few weeks.
He’s really great about seeing the community’s perspective. A couple of weeks ago, he told us in our group chat, “It’s so much more impactful to have stories from people who have been affected by this than officials.”

*not exactly his words but it was what he was getting at.
He’s a good editor and is one of the most helpful because he isn’t worried about my feelings.
It should have been me. I’m 20-years-old + part-time. He’s the one that has more connections. He’s the one who has more experience. He’s the one that can write well, + faster.
We were told his break would be six-eight weeks. But if we don’t stop the spread of this virus, he will be out of work even longer.
Now, more than ever, it is so extremely vital to subscribe to your local newspaper. We are providing so much more information than you can ever imagine. And, we often focus on how this virus is affecting us locally. We focus on how YOU can help your community, too.
This information - I promise you - it’s not to control you or spark fear. It’s to make you aware of what’s going on + for you to form your own opinions.
For four weeks, our online edition starts at $6.28.

$6.28 is something you can spare. Anything helps.

And I feel like for The Courier, especially, we’ve been there for the community.

It’s time for the community to be here for us.
