Whatever you do please DO NOT BUY YOUR CHILD A BUNNY FOR EASTER. They’re fragile and require special care and can live up to 10 years. Think about if you’re ready to make that commitment.
Every year in the months after Easter, people release unwanted bunnies into the wild and rabbit rescues overflow. If you really want a bun (and they are wonderful just not for small kids) please considering adopting from a local shelter or rabbit rescue and do your research
Things to consider:
-you need to hold a rabbit the right way to support its spine. This can be hard for kids
-Litter training: its 100% possible but many people don’t and complain about “the smell”
-Rabbits are considered exotics and need specialized vet care ($$$)
Continued
-rabbits can hide their illnesses very well as prey animals and are also susceptible to something called GI stasis
-rabbits need proper food and hay. No food with seeds and corn, that’s “junk food” for buns
-you will need to spay/neuter your bun ($$$)
-rabbits are social critters and need plenty of interaction. If you have the space, getting a second rabbit to form a bonded pair is best
- buns need space to run around and explore
-consider whether your other pets will do well with a rabbit. Rabbits are easily frightened
