We have a Call to Action for global leaders to prevent a food security crisis while combating #COVID19. http://wbcsd.org/uehRc A thread..
As reported today by @guardian food supplies could be massively disrupted due to measures intended to control the spread of COVID19. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/09/coronavirus-could-double-number-of-people-going-hungry
The signatories of this Call to Action – businesses, farmer groups, industry, NGOs & academia – have 3 critical areas to minimize risks of global & regional food security crises in coming months. http://wbcsd.org/uehRc
Without urgent action by global leaders to reduce food security risk people suffering chronic hunger (800+ million before #COVID19) will increase dramatically – more than doubling in at-risk communities and vulnerable countries.
Action #1: Keep supply of food flowing across the world – its critical to maintain open trade for food, feed, farm inputs and other vital supplies. Transport & labor disruptions are already impacting food security. Export restrictions will wreak havoc.
Action #2: Scale support to the most vulnerable – nutritious affordable food must be available for all. Families everywhere are experiencing dramatic income loss due to disruptions from the #COVID19 pandemic.
Action #3: Invest in sustainable resilient food systems – economic recovery packages must consider people & planet. There is no short-term fix to these challenges, but we can seize the opportunity to recover in a better and stronger way.
There are many specific local & regional steps to avoid food system disruptions from salvaging harvests to scaling logistics for re-stocking store shelves with fresh produce and staple foods. Following all 3 parts of this Call to Action matters.
Together we CAN do this. In fact we MUST take these actions to protect the vital food supplies on which we all depend. See this shared #COVID19 Call to Action for more details http://wbcsd.org/uehRc . End Thread.
