It’s been a really heavy few weeks at work and I’m grateful for this long weekend. I am exhausted and love being in a job where I can help blind and partially sighted people.

As many of you know, I am visually impaired. I am registered as SSI (Severely Sight Impaired).
I was initially registered as Sight Impaired in 2007, but as a woman who loves to take things to the next level, I was upgraded to SSI a year later.

We are in unprecedented times, and the government’s reaction to this and many employers, including my own have been fantastic.
No one has all the answers, but I can tell you, for free, many are trying to find them.

As someone who is SSI, I want to tell you the reality of what it is like for people with sight impairments during this time.
Let’s talk about the letters the Govt:” & NHS have sent out. I got mine today...

It is in STANDARD PRINT. That’s great if you have no sight impairment, but hard or impossible to read if you do. That’s a great start.
Let’s talk shopping. I do my grocery shopping online. Previously, my best friend used to take me shopping every fortnight. I’d follow closely behind her and shout out stuff from the LARGE TEXT list on my phone. What a hoot.
