#AcademicTwitter PSA: If you are studying #COVID impacts, do NOT ask people if they are in danger/distress unless you are offering help

Just completed an anonymous survey. Selected all the worst replies (scared for my life, suicidal, raped, no home) and it ended with "thank you"

Update: had respectful exchange with PI. Learned survey was IRB approved and information about IRB will be added to consent. PI said there was survey logic to offer targeted support but that was not my experience, so hopefully this instance will be rectified quickly

I am still concerned about the general trend of "opportunistic disaster research" raised by many in this thread. We cannot let speed and ambition be prioritized over meaningful engagement and rigor
