"don't mourn, organize" is a slogan said by far too many people who would benefit from understanding how liberation psychology actually works https://twitter.com/TuhRxxk/status/1247922493286948864
liberation psychology operates from the understanding that a structurally unjust world wears on the psyche, and subsequently the goal of psychology should not be to simply pacify people but to provide them with the therapeutic tools to develop resiliency in fighting oppression
the way I understand it, liberation psychology doesn't posit organizing as the sole solvent for actually developing the psychological resilience to necessary to do liberation work
and in fact I would argue that the prevailing assumption in radical movement cultures that organizing helps you develop psychological resilience is why so many people burn out too fast, develop severe psychological problems, or worsen existing ones
yes, by organizing more and more, you develop a stomach to deal with the difficult shit.
yet organizing is traumatic. if you don't have a means to deal with the trauma, and if your organizing culture isn't trauma informed, your attempts to be resilient will falter over time

subsequently, assuming organizers will be able to just find culturally competent social justice oriented therapy is not only a gag and a half but it reproduces the very individualist-oriented solutions that racial capitalism normalizes
for every time y'all said "don't mourn, organize" you put down the brene brown pop psyche & took cues from liberation + radical psychology to actually transform organizing culture
you might be better off than just telling people to stuff their hard feelings and hit the streets
you might be better off than just telling people to stuff their hard feelings and hit the streets
but telling people to just hit the streets when the psychology of your organizing culture is still entrenched in normative logic is largely unpersuasive
