It's 8.30pm and they've let me on the decks.
My three genres coming up are...
ANGLO-AMERICAN QUIRK (I am dual UK/US national)
CITIES AND PLACES (I am an urban planner)
COVER VERSIONS (often better than the original)
And I might play you a cover myself!

GENRE 1: ANGLO-AMERICAN QUIRK
I know, I look like him. Whatever happened to Liam Lynch? I bet he's not saying "whatever" about his country these days eh. #satire

Clearlake's frontman is Simon Pegg's brother and Lido is the most quintessentially moany/sentimental/stoic English album you will ever hear. It references Songs Of Praise, jumble sales and 10p's. This song seems to sum up our current situation.
OK Go are a total gimmick and I love it. There's another video for this song where they do it as a marching band which is just as good if not better. Spend an evening one time checking out all their videos. You won't regret it!
If you don't know Art Brut, also check out We Formed A Band and Emily Kane. This one goes out to my older sister @bimbambosie for obvious reasons. She taught me everything when it comes to music taste, so is at least partly responsible for this evening, ha
Only discovered this a few weeks back and it has been on repeat what with one thing and another (HT @simonmayo). As soon as my master's dissertation is done, I'm doing me some time trades!
I am from Leicester! Cornershop are from Leicester! This tune never fails to lift my mood. I know the band name is a riposte to British Asian stereotypes, but this one is still dedicated to all the cornershop owners keeping us going. We salute you!
Coincidentally, "pass the wine, fuck the government, I love you" are three phrases often heard in our house too...
Ear candy! I don't care what you think of me.
I saw this band in Cardiff in the Toucan Club in autumn 2002. Their production wasn't this slick back then. My other sister's (not on here) ex-boyfriend was really into them as I recall. He was in a band called Swanky Magic. #backstory
And finally...there's no way around it, this is lyrically my favourite song of all time, not least because I'm a Leicester City fan. I won't spoil it by saying any more. Solid GOLD. (Live version but I recommend finding the studio version too!)
So the big bosses @NeilMaggs2 & @TonyDDyer tell me I was supposed to post these with delays between them as if I was, you know, an actual DJ. I'll let you all take all of this first genre in and start playing some more tunes at 9ish and this time I'll do them ONE AT A TIME. Dur..
So onto my next genre which is...CITIES AND PLACES
I was introduced to this one by my good friend @carla_denyer on the way back from a Green Party Conference. I believe in England. I'm just not sure England believes in me. #BristolDJsUnite

I definitely don't believe in America any more. We went over the border to Tijuana in 2016 and the lines of people trying to get in to the country were huge. Thank you to Spike Lee for capturing this awful era so poignantly. #BristolDJsUnite
"The city looks pretty when you've been indoors for 23 days, I've ignored all your phonecalls". Pretty much my approach to Zoom, yeah
#BristolDJsUnite

"Ugly or pretty, it's still my city". I often think this when I see all the fly-tipping around Easton. #BristolDJsUnite
I lived in Manchester from 2006-2008. This and Forget Myself from the same record will always have a special place in my heart, encapsulating the thrill of the big city. "Coming home I feel like I...designed these buildings I walk by." #BristolDJsUnite
This makes me think of my favourite Bristol Bugle headline:
Bristol motorists are bringing roads to standstill every weekday at 5pm in huge 'Extinction Rebellion Rebellion' protest

We spent summer 2018 in the Isles of Scilly and it does feel like being cast away from everything. Only with pubs and the World Cup. #BristolDJsUnite
This should've been a hit. Ho ho ho. #BristolDJsUnite
Sally Ellyson of Hem has the most incredible voice. I heard their debut album Rabbit Songs as interval music at a Roger McGough poetry gig in Leicester. Lesson: always ask the sound guy what the music is! #BristolDJsUnite
My final track of CITIES AND PLACES is my favourite. If you think Bristol's bad, try Winnipeg. I stayed there for a 7-night soap opera once. It was fantastic. The title of the song is the actual city motto! I think he's being sarcastic? #BristolDJsUnite
How are you doing? Time to nip for another drink? I'd better get on with the next genre of 10 songs in a sec as the night is drawing in. It's my favourite cover versions...nearly all of which, I contend, are better than the originals! #BristolDJsunite
COVERS
I really like Phantom Planet's ouevre. Is Thom Yorke OK with this one do you think? #BristolDJsUnite

This guy is at the very least a bit of a knob (read his Wikipedia page) but this beats Oasis and Mike Flowers Pops (LOL!) into a cocked hat. #BristolDJsUnite
Continuing the theme of singers with tarnished reputations, here's a Smiths cover from the band that Natalie Portman likes in Garden State. (Niche reference.) #BristolDJsUnite
A second Radiohead cover, but I think you'll be pleased to know about this guy, a classical pianist who retooled their songs in intimate vignettes. #BristolDJsUnite
Who doesn't love James Dean Bradfield's voice? #BristolDJsUnite
Ok, this one isn't better than the original but it's still a lot of fun. I played this to my good wife without telling her what it was and she couldn't figure out what it was until the chorus kicked in. Well-disguised. #BristolDJsUnite
I heard this on Sex Education (the Netflix show, not the school lesson). It's utterly beguiling. I love Des'Ree, mind. She likes toast. #BristolDJsUnite
The Kim Wilde original has one of the best intros of all time in my eyes. I worked in a warehouse for a bit and they had Jack FM and I swear they played it every day. Moment of every day. #BristolDJsUnite
Jyoti Mishra (aka White Town) is still making music 23 years after his one-hit wonder. Can you cover your own song? I think so! #BristolDJsUnite
You gotta end with a classic. This is my favourite Elliott Smith song and lyric: "Everybody knows, you only live a day, but it's brilliant anyway." P.S. Stick around for the encore - my own cover version... #BristolDJsUnite
