Two shifts done on EPCP, I have a lot of notifications and emails to catch up on which I plan to do tomorrow morning before a late shift. For now, some reflections... 1/
There is still widespread confusion on what final year student nurses are doing. We ARE NOT joining a temporary or emergency register. The temporary reg is NOT open to students & it may well never be. 2/
Final years in the last 6 months are able to opt in to change the remainder of their programme to be spent in clinical practice on a paid placement where they will not be supernumerary. 3/
They still have student status, and should be trying to get any remaining competencies signed off. 4/
I have found through discussions with students starting EPCP nationally that there is still widespread misunderstanding from Trusts on what the role of these students is, what they should be paying them, some have even told students that after a number of weeks they 5/
will be able to âstep upâ to band 5. How can they promise this when the temp register may not even open for students? I am concerned about the position that students will be put in due to widespread misunderstanding. 6/
In addition to the role issues, there is disparity in regards to protected learning time. Some Trusts are telling students that they can work 30 hrs and have 7.5 hrs per week for consolidation of learning, reflection and study. Others, if you want to do this, you will have to 7/
do it in your own time and it may mean an extension to your programme in order to meet clinical hours requirement to complete your programme and join the full register. 8/
There is also disparity when it comes to induction into Trusts. Induct us properly now so we can function to the best of our ability and stay out once we qualify. 9/
Confusion aside, I would like to personally thank the keyworkers who have sped up their normal processes in order to get the frontliners out there quickly. They are also working around the clock to support us, train us, and get documentation to us, they are the unsung heroes. 10/

Itâs early days and I am expecting a lot of change in the team I have been placed in. I am well supported currently and am very lucky to have one of my ex-lecturers in the team Iâm in. But I am still anxious. I am worrying about bringing back the virus to my kids for one. 13/
I will be vlogging and documenting bringing back the #DiaryOfAFinalYear back to life. I also encourage students in other years to use #DiaryOfAFirstYear and #DiaryOfASecondYear - this will go down in history and we should document our student experience. 14/
Obviously in accordance with @nmcnews social media guidance which you can find here: https://www.nmc.org.uk/standards/guidance/social-media-guidance/ 15/
Finally, thank you so much for your support, best wishes and check ins. They really do make such a huge difference. Keep safe and well all. And keep feeding back to @RCNStudents so we can continue to advocate
