YGO META THREAD⤵️

wanted to write a little thread on the omote/yami relationship, as it's something that i find really interesting, and (unfortunately) is inconsistent throughout different iterations of the DM canon.

it's important to establish first whether it's predetermined
or, conversely, whether it's just left to chance who actually finds a millennium item.

there's a ton of evidence that points to the former. i don't really think i need to explain the visual aspect—atemu looks a lot like yuugi, even when he isn't possessing his body. with bakura
it's a little different, as tkb doesn't resemble ryou *all* that much, but there are still clear visual similarities between them—their hair being both established to be quite rare in canon and being shared seems unlikely to be only coincidental.

there's actually a lot of other
evidence that points to the relationship being predetermined, however.

namely, this is found in DSOD. that's a significant detail because DSOD follows the manga canon as opposed to the anime canon, which—as i'll touch on later—muddies the whole issue a lot.

regardless, in DSOD
shaadi very clearly says this when ryou's father tries to take the ring. this is important because, as it indicates that the way that relationship works is sort of like soulmates.

there's absolutely a notion that there are two halves of a soul that are 'destined' for one another
later on in this scene, shaadi explains that the person who will ultimately host the pharaoh's spirit is a young boy—he's very clearly referring to yuugi here. additionally, there's a (really cool) scene in which the spokes of the ring all point to ryou, indicating a connection.
that, combined with the manga, is a solid basis to understand that the spirits that reside within the items and the otome are linked together in a soulmate-esque way; that is, that they share a predetermined and innate connection.

…and then there's the anime.
the anime, of course, diverges from that canon, as do some other properties, specifically in the case of bakura.

in the duelist kingdom arc of the anime, there's a whole side plot—altered from the manga—in which bakura decides that he wants to possess the soulless mokuba so as
not to deal with the struggle of suppressing a personality.

this doesn't go well; his plan is ultimately thwarted. however, it's is interesting because, theoretically, it shouldn't be possible. bakura's host—which is established to be predetermined—is ryou, so possessing another
person shouldn't work.

honestly, i think it's just an oversight on the anime's part, as it's never really brought up again and there's a lot of evidence that points to the connection being predetermined in other forms of media.
of course, the relationship between malik and his dark side is a little different, as he's a fragment of malik's childhood trauma that—somehow—manages to become tied to the rod.

but it is interesting that in canon, despite the origin being completely different, the basic design
of the yami and otome being linked to an item (or, as western fandom likes to call it, hikari) remains the same for them as it does for the other 2 pairs in the series.

for all of them, there's truly a sense that it's two sides to one whole.
just adding one thing onto this thread: there’s a cool thing yami says to yuugi in e84 of the sub that alludes to this relationship.

he comments that it is the ‘fate’ of the holders of the items to protect their other self, which imo really speaks to the soulmate aspect of it.
