I love this game, but a temporary shutdown is the right move. Too many courses were operating near capacity. Too many CDC guidelines were violated. Too many staffers were at risk. I saw it myself. I get daily emails from the folks who take your greens fee.
Public courses in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam were jammed. No singles out there walking. The optics were awful. Golfers were essentially thumbing their noses at the pleas to be considerate and stay home.
I could see allowing singles and twosomes out. No carts. But too many foursomes showed up and stood shoulder to shoulder on tees and greens. When the Jersey boys showed up, a residents only rule should’ve been put in play.
These folks weren’t just driving to the course. They were stopping for coffee, grabbing a sandwich, putting gas in the car, buying six packs (and leaving cans on the course). Bottom line, if 1,200 golfers a week were on the course, odds are high that some were Covid-19 positive.
I hope we’re back on the tee soon. When it’s time, I’ll be playing Centennial & Patriot Hills, who have conscientiously stayed closed. In the mean time, I just had my kids drag out the Xbox 360 so I can play Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 Masters edition.
