Pointing out the dissonance in this current moment. Disability rights activists have been asking for ages to work from home or in some cases to study virtually. The responses they tended to get was 'this is not possible', and now that it suits global capital guess what?
Running a decentralised office means that organisations can hire activists wherever they live. This allows the activist to continue their local/community based organising and to bring that rich experience into their work
Virtual work also allows activists to be anonymous if they so wish. A lot of activism for instance is criminalised in particular countries and contexts.
It's important not to romanticise working virtually. The digital divide is real. Allow colleagues the option of joining calls via audio only (not everyday video). Also think of timezone solidarity and consider scheduling calls at different times to accomodate colleagues
Remember the @FRIDAfund mantra ‘happiness should be at the centre of our feminist organising’.
As colleagues at @APC_News constantly remind us it is important to ask who is developing the tools you are using and for what purpose. In the words of Erika Smith, 'change your practice if you can't change your tools'.
Provide staff with the hardware and software they need to do their work. This includes laptops, paying for internet, providing equal wages for equal work, sick leave pay etc wherever your staff are based in the world
It's critical to remember the words of my colleague @felogene that "the repercussions of COVID 19 speaks to the failures of mainstream capitalism and neoliberalism". Let's use this moment to build and expand on the #FeministRealities , alternatives and proposals that exist
