It didn’t stand a chance did it? Maharashtra has the most number of COVID-19 cases in the country and capital Mumbai the lion’s share of that dreadful statistic. The city is still almost everywhere, so still, you feel you are looking at images in an archive.

A skeletal public transport runs so that people who run the essential services can be at work. With just his thoughts for company this man doesn’t realize he’s a VIP today. He will be able to get on the bus without risking life and limb. He will get to sit all the way home.

Physical distancing is the new normal in a city that has no sense of personal space and has never had the patience to wait. Outside groceries, chemists and in the few work places that are still at work, new skills are being learned everyday.

In other places old skills still work. Mumbai Police check posts across the city are ensuring that only people who can prove they need to be out are let through. Street cred has a whole new meaning.

Even if only a fraction of people are at work when it’s time to head home it’s bound to be rush hour.

In the time of COVID-19 the struggle to survive is no longer metaphorical. Men and women, who have to keep Mumbai running are at it with even greater frenetic, relentless energy than usual. Their new weapon cum accessory, the face mask. Everyone has to wear one in public.

With everyone herded into tiny spaces of expensive real estate Mumbai’s rare public parks and grounds are lying fallow. Waiting.
