(G)I-DLE’s “Oh my god” ; a detailed theory thread (M/V — Part 1)
The M/V begins with Minnie, being dragged by two faceless people. We don’t know exactly, where they’re taking her, but I think they’re dragging her into the white room, where the other backup dancers will appear to try and drag her in further.
The reason that she doesn’t look so alarmed is because temptation can look like something good (read more in the roles thread). I assume that she thinks what she’s doing is right. Also in the start, her body is clean and she’s wearing all white, showing how naïve she is at first.
+ I don’t exactly know what the liquid means so I’ll leave that up to y’all’s interpretations.
Now, we see Minnie hugging herself, which is kind of a parallel to this scene, where she looks messed up. Compare the two, they’re in the same room, but her hair is more ruffled and her nose is bleeding, it’s showing what temptation is slowly doing to her.
Side note: I think the wine or the liquids are subsidiary symbols for temptation
Then we see Soyeon dancing alone in the white room. She seems to be freely dancing, and I’m not an expert on interpretive dances, but her dancing can possibly symbolize a longing for love and attention, as you can see her feeling herself, like she wants a lover’s hands on her.
After that, we can see Minnie is crawling to what looks like an opening. If you’ve watched the mv, the way she crawled seemed to be hasty. She realized what she was getting into and she tried to escape from it through an opening that she thought could be an escape.
“Why didn’t she just run with her feet? It’s much faster that way.” because temptation isn’t easy to get away from, it isn’t just as easy as running to the light. Getting out of this loop is difficult and it feels like you can’t use your feet and you have to crawl your way out.
When Minnie does get out, it might’ve been a trap, and she realized that isn’t easy to get out of this temptation.
The shot cuts to Yuqi walking alone, looking calm, but as the images of Soojin flash, she started to grow stressed. It seemed as if she was having a relapse and tried to forget about these rough times, but she fell in exhaustion. This scene, in my opinion was really simple.
Then, we are introduced to Miyeon who looks like a total goddess, and she symbolizes purity and hope. It shows with her sitting on a throne inside a heavenly-looking place and she’s wearing all white with beautiful jewelry.
In a weird way, she has this maternal feel to her, which is why Yuqi approaches Miyeon. She needed guidance in trying to forget her worries (or she might’ve sensed that something bad is happening to Soyeon and Minnie but that is for another time).
After this, we see the cup of wine descent into what looks like hell. And we see Soyeon with the backup dancers (I already explained this in the roles so go see it for yourself) and she’s given into it all, not realizing the repercussions.
Next, we see Minnie trying to escape from the grasps of the backup dancers, but she fails to do so as the cover her and drag her in further. I won’t explain this either as I already have explained it in the roles.
+ Side note: In here, the lyrics says, “Oh my god, she showed me all the stars.” which can allude to sexual pleasures as the phrase used was to show that what they’re craving for this love and attention from someone.
Now, we are introduced to absolutely flawless (see, look what temptation has done to me) Soojin. In the M/V, she gives off this vibe as an innocent but deadly type. Again, showing how temptation can distract you from the consequences of getting too into it.
+ If you want to know more, check out the roles thread, it’s much more detailed there when it comes to the members’ roles since this thread is story focused.
After this, we are presented with Soojin under flashing lights, which is also some kind of distraction from the horrors of temptation. Soojin is using her beauty, charms, and voice to avert your eyes from the truth and what is bad.
Next is Soyeon’s meaningful rap verse. The first line is “Oh god, how could you put me into this temptation?” It’s a parallel to Jesus’ “Oh god, why have you forsaken me?” when Jesus is crucified. She’s having the same thoughts as Jesus when she realized how bad temptation is.
During this, rap we see that Soyeon “can’t get away from ‘her’ “ who is this “her” she’s talking about? Soyeon is talking about temptation. And even though she tries to escape it, she is behind barbed wires which can symbolize that she is trapped.
Don’t mind the other rap verses, as they’re also stating the same thing, which is how she can’t escape this addiction or temptation.
In this shot, we can see Soyeon seems to be approaching someone from above. It’s a parallel to how Yuqi seemed guidance and comfort in Miyeon, but now it’s Soyeon approaching, presumably, Soojin. We can tell that this is a flashback because of the b&w
The last line is “If this is sin, I’ll then pay the piper.” It just shows how far she’s gone. It doesn’t matter that she’s making a mistake or she’s sinning, but she’s willing to pay the price so long that she continues to experience this bliss, which she will pay in the end.
