Colleges pretending to care about their students right now is incredible. I received my $37 refund yesterday, preceded by emails about how we need to pay attention to our mental health and how the college is “here for us.”
2 Because I do not live on campus, the only thing I was refunded for was my parking pass, which I paid $200 for the whole year. On March 30th, we received an email explaining that room, board & parking fees were being refunded.
3 I get it — professors, staff, etc. still need to be paid, but my classes were moved online on March 10th. They were canceled for a week. I no longer have access to the student rec center, the numerous campus libraries and the many other resources included in the tuition I pay
4 I’m tired of receiving emails about the “resources” available to help me through this time. I, along with numerous college students, lost my job. We are the restaurant workers, the grocery store clerks, the STNAs, the college campus workers. I haven’t had a paycheck in weeks.
5 I’m worried about paying my bills. $37 is less than 1% of the money I have given the university this semester. It’s a joke. It’s a joke to tell your students you care about them and then do the bare minimum to help them.
6 Many of us do not qualify for unemployment, stimulus checks or the various resources available for FULL TIME workers because we’re considered full-time students and part time workers (even though many of us work 30+ hours per week)
7 College students are falling through the cracks. “Young people are the future” and yet, we are completely and utterly being left behind.
It’s time to do better.
