Very excited to see TANC hosting this incred talk with a former BPP member involved in tenant organizing in Harlem in the mid-60s..but the archivist in me needs to make sure you all know this cover of the BPP paper is covering the People's Housing Tribunal which was Dec 1970. https://twitter.com/TANCBay/status/1248092120692346887
The People's Housing Tribunal was organized by People's Housing Coalition, a united front of community groups including the Black Panthers, the Young Lords, I Wor Kuen, Metropolitan Council on Housing, and United Puerto Rican Students of Columbia University đź’–
The New York People's Housing Tribunal charged the city of New York with a wide range of crimes; from police violence to deadly neglect, racism, and soring rents. The city was issued a summons but nobody showed.
Possibly inspired directly from this tribunal a coalition in Chicago had a People's Housing Tribunal in Nov. 1972 against the Gutman Brother's who owned over a hundred buildings in Uptown Chicago charging them with deadly neglect and discrimination.
Maybe it's time to bring back the People's Housing Tribunal 🙂✌️
