I don't rly care about the shoplifting comic but I am a little confused seeing "no one gets fired over shoplifting" b/c wow was that not true at the Lowe's I worked at

Management was on the warpath over drill bits and fired the entire hardware dept multiple times in one year
To be fair that store was horribly managed and had some absolutely wild turnover figures in the HR manager's office
One time the loss prevention manager gave all us cashiers a lecture on following customers who "look suspicious" around the store and detailed that we should body block people from leaving in questionably legal ways

It was.. That store was a lot
I dunno if Lowe's still does this but they gave all cashiers a monthly test where you were given a cart full of stuff hiding inside of other boxes and if you didn't find a certain % you were fired on the spot

Im p sure no one actually put it into practice on real customers tho
"they told us to do a lot of sketchy this and then very few of us actually did it" is a pretty good summary of that job actually
For those keeping track of my retail stories this is also the store that regularly demanded employees clock out and then keep working if it looked like they were about to go over the maximum of 8h a day and get any overtime
I was thinking about it and I'm 90% sure in hindsight the reason so many drill bits got taken is b/c
1. They were tiny
2. They were expensive
3. The store accepted receiptless returns for some reason I'll never understand

No wonder everyone was on that shit
I worked returns for a few months and in the entire time I never saw a return refused (it required managerial approval)

This includes returns of:
* A used toilet
* A dead plant
* Products we didn't actually carry???
Anyway in the end they noticed I wasn't signing up enough ppl for credit cards and consigned me to the garden department where I was very chill and happy so the moral of the story is that sometimes not giving a shit is its own reward

I guess???
This thread went totally off the rails and I'm fine with that
Btw if you're wondering "why didn't they fire you" the answer is that I'd get unemployment if they did that and that would be horrible. Instead they tried to give me the most boring jobs possible, not knowing that as an introvert I found this incredibly relaxing
