My little rant.(Attn: to those with elderly parents)
My 89 year mother, recently took a fall in her yard. She got a compression fracture in her hip..but for the most part she is ok. She’s still in post surgery rehab and probably will be for another week.
Since we knew she’d be away from home, we arranged with the local post office to temporarily hold her mail. I would just swing by once a week and pick it up..which I did today.
When I was handed “the stack” I was floored by the amount. I counted 49 pieces....which upon inspection, turned out to be 90-95% political solicitations.
I’m not naïve. I know campaigns want donations..and this is the season. However, it’s clear to me that at some point, although she can’t afford it, my mother has been coaxed into donating. Prob more times than I need to know..as some of the envelopes are labeled “dedicated donor”
I’ve suspected this before when she’d get a solicitation call when I was visiting. I(and my sibs) tried to assure her that she doesn’t have to donate. But fact is, like a lot of the elderly, she’s old and gullible..and you know how obnoxiously persistent phone sellers are.
You know, if I knew it was merely a random(& seldom) call from an actual campaign, I might be a little more forgiving. However, the dramatic, hyper-concerned, scary statements scrawled in LARGE PRINT on some of the envelopes, produces the stench of preying on the elderly.
I have no way of knowing this, but I’d go out on a limb and say I bet a lot of these “causes” have no affiliation to a campaign whatsoever, and that any money sent in to them, goes straight into someone’s pocket.
That said, even “legit” sales calls to the aged, seem shady imho.
It won’t stop...and my mother isn’t the only one. There is no telling the amount of money taken from our elders in the name of some bogus political cause. I only hope those who participate in this dishonest, low life activity will someday face a reckoning.
End of rant. Here’s a photo of part of the stack.
Oh! My personal favorite. The yellow envelope marked “Air Delivery”. Are be back in the 1940s?
