So apparently @WBEZ host @MelbaLara said on air yesterday “...Chicago Public Schools is on spring break this week so students and teachers are taking a break from basically doing nothing.”
“...a break from basically doing nothing.”
This is extremely insulting to educators who have been prepping for remote learning for two weeks, and have actually been DOING remote learning since the governor wisely decided to close schools.
But don’t take our word for it. Take theirs...
“Just like everyone else, all I have been doing over ‘break’ is prepping for remote learning.”
“We've been doing remote learning ever since school was stopped.”
“Whaaaaat?! I have worked 12 hour days at home! That is despicable 😠
“personally I have been answering emails from parents for the past 2 weeks.”
“I’ve been working too. During spring break. I basically work every year during spring break.”
“I have 5 kids (12, 9, 7, 6, 4)... I assigned enrichment work from the 17th through 4/3 and once a week I contact all my parents!!! I also wrote 10 "great job" cards and mailed to students who completed ALL of the enrichment”
Yes, five kids AND remote teaching for weeks. She also found time to send a birthday card to a student who is having a rough time.

Many of our members also have children in CPS, and are at home both parenting and teaching.
“I’ve been working during spring break too, trying to catch up on work after trying to work from home w my baby.”
“Not only have I been prepping, I’m teaching virtual lessons for piano and band as well since we are around”
“What spring break? Working and tomorrow we have a ‘meeting.’ I’ve also been babysitting my grandson since my daughter and her hubby are ‘essential.’”
“I have my son doing work this week so next week there is less competition between homeschooling him and providing SSW services.”
“So many CPS teachers/clinicians/paras are not only Working from home, but also trying to homeschool their own children or take care of babies or young children.”
“We have been working so hard. I am working right now, during my so called break.”
You get the idea. Not shocking to hear. Just disappointing. But we expect anti-teacher sentiment to increase in the coming months. That’s what happens when people don’t know, don’t show or just don’t care about the reality of working in CPS. #WeStillTeach
