For fuck's sake there is no such thing as "PMC" it explains absolutely nothing. It is what Bachelard called an "epistemological obstacle." It displaces the structural problems of forming mass organizations onto the consciousness of a dubious sociological category
There is never, ever a linear relation between "class position" and "class consciousness," which is why the vitriol against "PMC" usually also comes from people who are "PMC." Popular consciousness as we all painfully know is not automatically class consciousness
Consciousness is ultimately an unhelpful category which obscures the way that people's ideas are generated as the effects of practices which are embedded in institutions, organizations, etc.
Division of manual and intellectual labor, intellectuals and party organization, ideological state apparatuses, are all classical Marxist discussions which can be studied to better illuminate the real questions obscured by the false answer of "PMC"
