This beautifully written op-ed by David Suzuki is a masterclass on how environmentalists should be speaking to public right now. It is explicitly NOT prescriptive but speaks to common #values that we all share and need to pull from in order to respond to this crisis collectively. https://twitter.com/faisal_moola/status/1248278531211173889
At the risk of being vilified by former colleagues in the environmental movement, now is not the time to banging on about the threat of subsidies to the oil and gas industry.. People are dying, losing their jobs, questions on how we build and sustain community in isolation.
Furthermore, some of the messaging by my fellow environmentalists is cringeworthy at best, tone-deaf or historically unwise at worst. In online chat w @emergence_zine yesterday, writer @RobGMacfarlane spoke of his discomfort w pandemic utopiaism.
Fish returning to Venetian canals, coyotes on Main Street are not evidence of rewilding. @RobGMacfarlane speaks of how historical pandemics have in fact typically led to "power re-asserting power". He rightfully notes ongoing genocide of Indigenous Peoples.
